A California astronomer has discovered what he believes is the 10th planet in our solar system, a group of NASA-funded researchers said on Friday.
(He's not telling reporters the name he's proposed, does anybody have any guesses or suggestions for the name?)

Situation Darfur
In Darfur, My Camera Was Not Nearly Enough. 'Our helicopter touched down in a cloud of camel-brown sand, dust and plastic debris. As the cloud gradually settled into new layers on the bone-dry desert landscape, we could make out the faces of terrified villagers. "Welcome to Sudan," I murmured to myself, grabbing my pen and waterproof notebook.''A former Marine, I had arrived in Sudan's Darfur region in September 2004 as one of three U.S. military observers for the African Union, armed only with a pen, pad and camera. The mandate for the A.U. force allowed merely for the reporting of violations of a cease-fire that had been declared last April and the protection of observers. The observers sometimes joked morbidly that our mission was to search endlessly for the cease-fire we constantly failed to find. I soon realized that this was no joke.'

A Prayer for the Dying
As a member of the bloggers Coalition for Darfur I recieve a weekly email, this weeks shocked me and is posted in its entirety.
As Mark Leon Goldberg of the American Prospect reported back in April, the Bush administration was leaning heavily on congressional leaders and managed to stall, and probably killed, the Darfur Accountability Act. As Goldberg explained, the bill
[E]stablishes targeted U.S. sanctions against the Sudanese regime, accelerates assistance to expand the size and mandate of the African Union mission in Darfur, expands the United Nations Mission in Sudan to include the protection of civilians in Darfur, establishes a no-fly zone over Darfur, and calls for a presidential envoy to Sudan.
Because of this pressue, the bill appears to be trapped in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the House Subcommittee on Africa, Global Human Rights and International Relations, presumably never to be seen again.
So what is Congress going to do now that sanctions, a no-fly zone and civilian protection are off the table? Apparently it has been reduced to "[encouraging] the people of the United States [to pray] for an end to the genocide and crimes against humanity and for lasting peace in Darfur, Sudan."
That's right, the US Congress has been reduced to calling on the American people to pray that somehow this genocide ends.
On July 1st, the US Senate quietly passed S.RES.186
A resolution affirming the importance of a national weekend of prayer for the victims of genocide and crimes against humanity in Darfur, Sudan, and expressing the sense of the Senate that July 15 through July 17, 2005, should be designated as a national weekend of prayer and reflection for the people of Darfur.
The House passed a companion resolution (H.RES.333) just yesterday.
The key portion of the resolution reads as follows
Resolved, That the House of Representatives--
(1) supports the goals and ideals of a National Weekend of Prayer and Reflection for Darfur, Sudan;
(2) encourages the people of the United States to observe that weekend by praying for an end to the genocide and crimes against humanity and for lasting peace in Darfur, Sudan; and
(3) urges all churches, synagogues, mosques, and religious institutions in the United States to consider the issue of Darfur in their activities and to observe the National Weekend of Prayer and Reflection with appropriate activities and services.
This resolution appears to be the work of the Save Darfur Coalition, a vital organization that has done a great deal to raise awareness of the genocide—but what does it say about the level of US commitment to address this situation when Congress is unwilling to do anything beyond simply asking the American people to pray for the dying people of Darfur?
If members of Congress are truly concerned about the deaths of nearly 400,000 Darfuris, or the fates of an estimated 3 million more, they are certainly capable of doing more than quietly declaring a "National Weekend of Prayer and Reflection."
Save Darfur deserves credit for getting Congress to even do this much, but this resolution cannot absolve Congress of its pathetic failure to adequately address the situation in Darfur. If anything, it only serves to highlight the government's utter lack of concern.

Rock You Like A Hurricane
This is not the first Hurricane Dennis. In 1999, another Dennis hit the Carolina coast. How do storms get their names? Here is the answer.
Hurricane Dennis has everyone around the Gulf of Mexico nervous. In the days to come, you will hear a lot about storm surge, one of the big concerns in Category 3 hurricane conditions. The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has a wonderful Web page with animation that explains this danger.
Since three of my readers are in Dennis's path in Louisiana, I'll show a page listing Louisiana's hurricane history.

Heart Goes Out To London
I reconize that EE is not a source of fast breaking world news, but I would not feel right skipping a post on this:
Brian Paddick of the Metropolitan police said the first blast occurred at 8.51am on a tube train about 100 metres into a tunnel from Liverpool Street station. Seven people died. The second blast, with the highest confirmed death toll so far, came five minutes later on a tube train on the Piccadilly line near King's Cross. Police confirmed 21 deaths.
At 9.15am, a third explosion hit a train in Edgware Road station, blowing a hole through the wall of a second train and possibly affecting a third. The explosion killed five people.
The final blast came half an hour later on a number 30 bus at Tavistock Square, near Russell Square. Mr Paddick said people had been killed in that attack, but did not confirm how many.
My sympathies go out to the people killed and injured, and thier families.

Darfur Drawn
In February of this year, Human Rights Watch workers traveled through the refugee camps clustered along the Sudan-Chad border and interviewed those fleeing the massacres in Sudan's western region of Darfur. When the researchers visited with families, they offered paper and crayons to the children who gathered around. What those little ones drew will terrify you: Pictures of Janjaweed invaders, villages under fire, bombs falling from planes, executions. Most of the images include a brief, harrowing description by the child, such as this 13-year-old describing the rape of women and girls ("They are forcing them to be wife"). Each drawing conveys the horror of Darfur with an immediacy that is heartbreaking. This is "the visual vocabulary of war." Witness it though the eyes of children.
(This is copied directly from Yahoo Picks, it conveyed the sorrow of the site so well.)

(Unique) Road food
Going on a road trip? Tired of stopping at chain restaurants and want to find some local flavour?
Check out Roadfood
"Great regional meals along highways, in small towns and in city neighborhoods. It is sleeves-up food made by cooks, bakers, pitmasters, and sandwich-makers who are America’s culinary folk artists. Roadfood is almost always informal and inexpensive; and the best Roadfood restaurants are colorful places enjoyed by locals (and savvy travelers) for their character as well as their menu."
