That totally unexpected telephone call from the mysterious benefactors behind the "Genius Awards" has opened some doors to the 54-year-old teacher of competitive forensics. With a colleague, he's finished a book, "It Doesn't Take a Genius," that will be published before the year's end, and he's used the money -- $500,000 paid out over five years -- to buy a car for his son and support his daughter's college education. But fame, and financial security, can be fleeting.
