Entangled Ephemera #2

In Search of Utopia: "Exploring the Hieroglyphics of Our Time." Utopia is a group blog with contributors from the left, the right, and the center of the political spectrum. They all seem to be trying to talk too each other, rather than at each other, with a goal to find practical responses to today's political questions.

I know I'm a day late on the second installment, but yesterday was a holiday.

News Hounds Manifesto

News Hounds started out as something else. "In early 2004, eight middle-aged citizens from different backgrounds and locations around the USA teamed up via MoveOn.org and the internet to volunteer our services for OUTFOXED, a documentary film by Robert Greenwald regarding Fox News Channel. For approximately three months, each of us watched FNC conscientiously for five or more hours a week and posted our findings regarding Fox's self-proclaimed mission of fair and balanced reporting. Appalled by our results, we, who would not meet in person until months later, banded together in cyberspace in concern and outrage over the failure of American media, and Fox News in particular, to relate the news properly. Rather than serve as the public's eyes and ears, Fox and other media conglomerates have become echo chambers for the rich and powerful with whom they have become all too cozy. This blog is an attempt to counter that alarming condition. We believe that a viable democracy depends upon viable media."

Here is a recent O'Reilly Factor "Inter(badger)view" which shows Bill has no use for facts.

European DisUnion

The result of Sunday's referendum in France to reject the EU Charter has plunged the 25-nation EU as well as France into crisis. Those problems are likely to deepen when the Netherlands holds a referendum on the treaty on Wednesday because opinion polls point to another heavy defeat.

Karama Karma

Karama C. Neal the creator of So what can I do?, which was highlighted in post here a few days ago has started another great blog, Open Letters. Karama has pledged to write one letter of concern each week.

"It's a small act that each of us can do enact positive social change, hold our elected officials and media accountable and claim person agency. I'll publish some of my letters here, along with the sources of information and other details I use to write them. I hope that you will use the information provided to write your own letters of concern."

I take the time to send my own letters to public officials every couple of months, I don't know how Karama (In case your wondering about her name I found this in a DUNE glossery, "KARAMA: a miracle; an action initiated by the spirit world.", not sure if it is at all related, bit it seems to fit.) , who is a Ph.D. in Genetics and Molcular Biology, finds the time to write these letters once a week and publish daily at SWCID? I know I will be visiting both sites regularly to see what I can do.

Entangled Ephemera #1

A bit of trivia from gullible.info has inspired a new weekly feature for EE and a new sidebar called Entangle Ephemera. The tidbit was, the average shortest path from one blog to another is 12 links. Each week starting from the arbitrary point of Pedantic Pundit, I will click through 12 subjectively random blog links (or until I dead end as some blogs don't link, but then the next week I will start again at the last weeks blog) and write a blog review, then post that blog in the sidebar and then start from their for the next blog path. I will post 12 blogs under Entangled Ephemera and then rotate the oldest link off.

Boulevard of Broken Links

MUSEUM OF E-FAILURE, this feature of Ghost Sites was launched in early 2000; it is an image gallery of some 1,250 screens captured from some 900 Web projects that for various reasons "went dark" during the years 1998 to 2004. Some had a chance to post a self-penned epitaph in the form of a "farewell screen"; others simply expired and drifted lifelessly, with no visible indications for their demise - often for many months. This collection provides a partial, but revealing look at the latter half of the Web's 10 years of existence. Annotations (Web Elegies) are included where possible in order to place each site in its historical context.

The Cannes Film Festival has officially opened. The stars have ceremoniously climbed the legendary stairs, opening this 58th edition of the Festival. Keep up to date with the news and events at the Cannes Festival Blog. Storm Brewing

Ever since President Grant directed his secretary of war in 1870 to make "meteorological observations . . . of the approach and force of storms," the federal government has been America's official forecaster, providing weather information to the public.

That could change under legislation proposed by Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., who says the National Weather Service has grown so sophisticated and technologically adept that it threatens the $1 billion-a-year private forecasting business.

Thank you to Jeff at Library Chronicles for pointing this article out.
