Re-Orientation
Citing "something vaguely effeminate" about his eight-month-old son Michael, first-time father Joe Oebrick, 32, reported Tuesday that he suspects the infant may be a homosexual.
(The article is in the Onion, so is fake, but the picture is of my friend Ian who is a San Francisco comedian, he claims to have no idea who the kid is)

Fight For Public Broadcasting
On Thursday, June 23, 2005 the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Obey-Leach-Lowey amendment by a final vote of 284 to 140. Eighty-seven Republicans joined 196 Democrats and one Independent in voting for the amendment, which restores $100 million previously cut from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Fiscal 2006 appropriation. House Members reported they heard from millions of public radio and television supporters from all over the country urging them to restore critical funding for CPB, whose Community Service Grants help local stations pay programming costs.
While the amendment approved yesterday restores CPB's appropriation to the full $400 million which had been advance-appropriated two years ago, it did not restore funds for public broadcasting’s digital transition, for renewal and replacement of public television’s satellite interconnection system, and for early learning initiatives such as Ready to Learn.
(Yesterday also brought darker news in the fight for public broadcasting. The Republican-dominated board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) hired a former Republican National Committee chair as the next president, injecting partisanship into the very organization designed to shield public broadcasting from political meddling. This is only the latest effort by White House ally and CPB board chair Kenneth Tomlinson to remake public broadcasting as a partisan mouthpiece.)

Planet trio
June 23-29 – Planet trio. The three planets that will cluster to within 5º of each other, low in the west-northwest evening twilight are Venus (magnitude –3.9), Saturn (+0.2) and Mercury (-0.2). Between June 23 and 29, these three will fit within a circle measuring just 5º across, the smallest circle (1.4º) occurring on June 26. As such, their rapidly changing night-to-night positions relative to one another should be most fascinating to watch. Individual conjunctions include Venus and Saturn (1.3º on June 25), Mercury and Saturn (1.4º on June 26), and Mercury and Venus (a mere 0.1º on June 27). A drawback for observers will be that these three planets will be visible for at best for only about an hour after sundown before they start getting too low to the horizon to be readily observable. Also during this time frame, take note of the "Twin Stars," Pollux (+1.2) and Castor (+1.6) of Gemini, which will be positioned roughly 6 to 10º above and to the right (west-northwest) of the trio

Domestic Invasion
THEY may look like lovable pets but Britain’s estimated 9m domestic cats are being blamed by scientists for infecting up to half the population with a parasite that can alter people’s personalities.
Infected men, suggests one new study, tend to become more aggressive, scruffy, antisocial and are less attractive. Women, on the other hand, appear to exhibit the “sex kitten” effect, becoming less trustworthy, more desirable, fun- loving and possibly more promiscuous.

I'll get back on track with this (unless people think it's dorky).
The Rambler - Tim Rutherford-Johnson has created a music blog that is witty and interesting for reasons other than the music, and the music info and news is pretty cool too. The quote from his blog blurb, "I'm a PhD candidate in musicology, an occasional writer and teacher on music, and in the gaps I work as a freelance editor. I live in London and sometimes it shows. This blog covers new music, often classical, and includes live reviews. Simply because I want to."

Since its founding in the Spring of 2000, Mr. Beller's Neighborhood has published nearly seven hundred pieces of writing, been nominated for a 2002 Webby Award in the Print and Zine catagory, and published a book, Before and After: Stories from New York.
The site combines a magazine with a map. It uses the external, familiar landscape of New York City as a way of organizing the wildly internal, often unfamiliar emotional landscapes of the city dweller.

The Great Divide
The income gap between the rich and the rest of the US population has become so wide, and is growing so fast, that it might eventually threaten the stability of democratic capitalism itself.
Is that a liberal's talking point? Sure. But it's also a line from the recent public testimony of a champion of the free market: Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan.

Darfur Update
Defence chiefs from the United States and Europe will seek at a NATO meeting on Thursday to end a weeks-long dispute threatening to delay air transport vital to boosting peace efforts in Sudan's Darfur region.
The snag is a turf-war tussle between Washington and some European capitals over who should coordinate offers of help to the African Union as it seeks to triple its Darfur mission to some 7,700 troops by late-September.

Bush's Approval Rating Hits A Low.
President Bush's approval ratings for handling the economy, Iraq and Social Security have fallen to the lowest levels of his White House tenure, according to a USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll taken Friday through Sunday.
Satisfaction with congressional Republicans also has sagged. By 47%-36%, those polled say the country would be better off if Democrats controlled Congress. That's the best showing for Democrats since the GOP won control of both houses of Congress in 1994.

Golden Age Ephemera
For the entire 2005 year, kiddie records weekly, will be featuring weekly stories and songs from the golden age of children's records, a period which ran from the mid 1940s into the early 1950s. Each one of these recordings has been carefully transferred from the original 78s (plus a few 45s) and encoded to MP3 format for you to download and enjoy.

For The Record: "Reality-based information, opinion, and activism concerning national and international affairs." Quoting the about page, "We (Jessica Wilson and Benj Hellie) are assistant professors of philosophy at the University of Michigan and Cornell, respectively, who are interested in and worried about current national and international affairs. One goal of this blog is to keep a (partial) record of articles, opinions, sites and so on striking us as worthy of attention in the course of our news- and web-surfing; another is to periodically write longer posts focused on analyzing and/or understanding the historical and ideological underpinnings of current events (see especially the 'Foundations' and 'Capitalism and Its Alternatives' categories in the Archives). Yet another goal is to call readers' attention to certain opportunities for activism. "
