Soap Box
Folklore.org is a web site devoted to collective historical storytelling. It captures and presents sets of related stories that describe interesting events from multiple perspectives, allowing groups of people to recount their shared history in the form of interlinked anecdotes. The site is structured as a series of projects containing related, interlinked stories. The stories are indexed by their characters and the topics they cover, and may be sorted by various criteria. Readers can rate the stories, and add comments, or other stories. Folklore is still incomplete, and undergoing active development. Currently, the Folklore site only supports a single project, about the development of the original Macintosh, but that will be changing.

Champlain
The Geography and Map Division at the Library of Congress recently mounted the 10,000th map on its Web site at www.loc.gov/rr/geogmap/. This milestone comes 10 years after the division started digitizing maps in 1996.
The map is Samuel de Champlain's 1607 chart on vellum of the North American coast from Nova Scotia to Massachusetts, pictured below. The unique document, originally intended for presentation to Henry IV, King of France, was compiled by Champlain (1567–1635), founder of New France (Canada). The map provides the first thorough delineation of the Canadian and New England coast from Cape Sable to Cape Cod.

The Moon, The Sun And The Truth
Wikileaks is developing an uncensorable Wikipedia for untraceable mass document leaking and analysis. their primary interests are oppressive regimes in Asia, the former Soviet bloc, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, but they also expect to be of assistance to those in the west who wish to reveal unethical behavior in their own governments and corporations. They aim for maximum political impact; this means the interface is identical to Wikipedia and usable by non-technical people. They have received over 1.2 million documents so far from dissident communities and anonymous sources.

(While I am generally against the excesses of the modern American litigious society, I understand the elements that go into it's creation. First the incredible amount of dangerous products that are allowed to market in the name of profit, and second, the exesses of corparate profits .in comparison to the average American paltry income fuels a need to punish.)

Not Telling You
Starting in the new year, hundreds of millions of pages of classified government documents were automatically declassified (see a FGI's post for background). You might assume that you should able to access these documents in the National Archives, but think again. Declassification is different from "release" so certain documents will remain classified and some documents will be withheld. This is the result of President Bush's Executive Order on Declassification (Exec order 13292) which has nine grounds for exemptions and various restrictions on the release of declassified documents.

Starlight Starbright
Comet McNaught (a surprise comet) , has brightened rapidly over the last few days. It's now bright, beautiful, and easy to see at dawn and dusk — as long as you know exactly where to look and have an unobstructed horizon and perfect conditions. It's now a naked-eye spectacle from far northern latitudes, where the observing geometry is most favorable. The farther south you live, the lower the comet is in the twilight. . A map is available on the Skytonight homepage.

Super Grover
Grover is Bitter - For many of us, Grover was hands-down the best character on the show: bringing laughter, intelligence and a certain irreverence not seen in other 2-dimensional children's programs of the day. And he was cute, too. But what many of us didn't see behind that brave exterior was a monster cowering in the face of his own insecurities, a monster so unsure of himself he wouldn't even watch his own performances, and a monster who ultimately allowed his own weaknesses to overcome him and nearly ruin his career. A genius, a tyrant, a womanizer or just a washed-up drunk? It's time to expose Grover- the monster behind the myth.
