Alchemical Key
The Voynich manuscript is a five hundred year-old relic discovered in 1912 at a library in Rome, consisting of 240 pages of illustrations and writing in a language not known to anyone. Deciphering the text has eluded even the best cryptographers and some have even dismissed the book an entertaining but lengthy hoax. But a statistical analysis of the writing shows that the manuscript does seem to follow the basic structure and laws of a working language.

War Profits
As of yesterday, gas prices are the highest in U.S. history—we just passed the 1981 record, even adjusted for inflation.1 Prices could reach $4.00 per gallon in parts of the country, just in time to crimp summer vacation plans. As consumers suffer, the oil industry continues to reap the windfall—breaking profit records on an almost quarterly basis. It's outrageous!
Enough is enough. Hearings start today on H.R. 1252, a House bill that would make gas price gouging a federal crime, punishable by 10 years in prison. Speaker Pelosi has said she'll move the bill to a vote this week—if there's the two-thirds majority required to fast track the bill through the process.
Oil company lobbyists are frantically trying to stop the bill. Your representative needs to hear from you today. Will you sign MoveOn's petition asking Congress to pass the price-gouging bill—and then tell your friends?

Crisis In Darfur
The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum recently unveiled Crisis in Darfur, which it created in collaboration with Google. The first project in the museum's Genocide Prevention Mapping Initiative, Crisis in Darfur intends for users "to visualize and better understand the genocide currently unfolding in Darfur, Sudan. The Museum has assembled content—photographs, data, and eyewitness testimony—from a number of sources that are brought together for the first time in Google Earth."
The project allows people through Google Earth to see the location of damaged and destroyed villages, track the sites of refugees and internally displaced persons, and access links to photos, videos, and testimonies from the genocide. (Via National Geographic News)

Politics As Usual
According to an article in today's NYT, Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez "admitted" that mistakes were made on the political firings of 8 US attorneys. Senators Charles Schumer and Dianne Feinstein have again called for Gonzalez to step down. It's now clear that this issue was not a low-level administrative mistake. The House Judiciary Committee has a list of documents regarding the Attorney firings. One of the most bizarre things to emerge was that former Whitehouse Counsel Harriet Miers originally wanted to fire all 93 attorneys. The AP has more (via Huffington Post).
