Super Collider
The largest superconducting magnet ever built, in the Atlas detector at the Cern lab, has been powered up successfully. Engineers sent a current of 21,000 Amps round the coils. Atlas will analyze collisions in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which will recreate conditions just after the Big Bang. More about the ATLAS experiment plus a video explaining it. There will be a test tomorrow. You can also visit CERN next time you are in Geneva.

The Back Of The Class
Open Questions - A place for everyone to explore on the frontiers of science. This site has been designed to organize scientific information, both on and off the Web, around a number of fundamental "open questions" - the questions that motivate leading edge basic scientific research. By exploring the pages here you can gain an understanding of many of the questions that still represent major mysteries even to top scientists. You'll find that you need not be concerned if you don't immediately recognize all the terminology of any particular field. Many of the resources collected here contain tutorial presentations which provide needed background. We've added a good deal of commentary of our own to get you started and point out the basic landmarks.

A Bit Of A Time Slip
Does the brain tap into the future?
"I'd like you to conduct a short experiment. While looking at your feet, stomp on the ground. You will notice that your visual perception of your foot hitting the floor matches your sensation of touching it. This would be fine except for one thing: the speed of light is vastly faster than the conduction times and synaptic delays through the long nerves and spinal cord from your feet. As a result, you should be seeing the event before you feel it -- and the delay should be noticeable."
