Bush's Education Policy
The pastoral fields and white frame houses appear at peace, but this Pennsylvania farm town is deeply at war over teaching Darwin or Christian creationism in its schools.
Both sides acknowledge the political context of the debate over Darwinism, and the relation to the re-election of staunchly Christian President George W. Bush. "Christians are a lot more bold under Bush's leadership, he speaks what a lot of us believe," said Mummert. "We've been attacked by the intelligent, educated segment of the culture," he said, adding that the school board's declaration is just a first step.
(No steps forward, three steps back. How far back will Bush take us?)

Fischer Ravinging
Fischer, 62, was in high spirits and characteristically defiant as he arrived at the airport.
As he walked toward the airport entrance, he turned, unzipped his pants and acted like he was going to urinate on the wall. He called Japan's ruling party "gangsters," and said he was being hounded by the United States because it is "Jew-controlled."

Chess Haven
Former world chess champion Bobby Fischer has been granted Icelandic citizenship after a vote in the country's parliament.
Mr Fischer, 62, has been on the run from the US for more than 10 years for violating economic sanctions in a match he played in former Yugoslavia in 1992.
Japan, where Mr Fischer is being held, has said it will not deport him to the US if Iceland grants him citizenship.

Bush's Environmental Policy
After nearly a quarter century of trying, the advocates for opening an Alaska wildlife refuge to oil drilling may finally be close to achieving their goal.
More importantly, the Senate assured that any Alaska refuge drilling provision would be linked to the budget process, depriving opponents of using a filibuster to block action — a tactic that has been used repeatedly over the years to stymie ANWR drilling proposals.

Ephemeral Films
Prelinger Archives was founded in 1983 by Rick Prelinger in New York City. Over the next twenty years, it grew into a collection of over 48,000 "ephemeral" (advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur) films. In 2002, the film collection was acquired by the Library of Congress, Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division. Prelinger Archives remains in existence, holding approximately 4,000 titles on videotape and a smaller collection of film materials acquired subsequent to the Library of Congress transaction. Its goal remains to collect, preserve, and facilitate access to films of historic significance that haven't been collected elsewhere. Included are films produced by and for many hundreds of important US corporations, nonprofit organizations, trade associations, community and interest groups, and educational institutions. Getty Images represents the collection for stock footage sale, and some 1,600 (soon to be 2,000) key titles are available here. The collection currently contains over 10% of the total production of ephemeral films between 1927 and 1987, and it may be the most complete and varied collection in existence of films from these poorly preserved genres.

Politicing for Chief
In an effort to show his ultra-conservative chops to jockey for the Chief Justice position...
Justice Antonin Scalia criticized the Supreme Court's recent decision to strike down the juvenile death penalty, calling it the latest example of politics on the court that has made judicial nominations an increasingly bitter process.

Bush's Interogation Policy
The Bush administration gave the CIA extensive authority to send terrorism suspects to foreign countries for interrogation just days after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, The New York Times reported on Sunday.
The newspaper said President Bush signed a still-classified directive that gave the CIA broad power to operate without case-by-case approval from the White House in the transfer of suspects -- a process known as rendition. The CIA declined to comment on the report, and the White House would not confirm the directive.
