Full Courting Press
President Bush will spearhead an election-style public relations campaign early next year to try to convince Americans that Social Security is in urgent need of change but will keep dollar and cent details deliberately vague, analysts and officials say. If this campaign is like his last one, vagueness will only be the begining. Lies and distrotions will be the name of the game.

Global Test
Bush is only interested in countries when he's invading them. Bush bragged about the U.S. commitment of $35 million to help respond to a tragedy that has cost more than 100,000 lives and displaced millions of people in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Somalia and other countries. What the president did not say is that this initial commitment is less than the planned expenditure for his Jan. 20 inauguration: $40 million. It was, as well, less than the immediate commitment by smaller and less wealthy nations such as Spain, which has already promised to provide $68 million.

Logos of Ether
'Floating Logos' the images are inspired by signs perched high atop very tall poles in order for people to view them from a very long distance. The poles are digitally removed from the image in order to give the illusion that the signs are disconnected from the ground as they ominously float above us.

Whitewashed
On Tuesday night, the Sci Fi Channel aired its final installment of Legend of Earthsea, the miniseries based—loosely, as it turns out—on Ursala LeQuin's Earthsea books. The books, A Wizard of Earthsea and The Tombs of Atuan, which were published more than 30 years ago, are about two young people finding out what their power, their freedom, and their responsibilities are.
I don't know what the film is about. It's full of scenes from the story, arranged differently, in an entirely different plot, so that they make no sense. My protagonist is Ged, a boy with red-brown skin. In the film, he's a petulant white kid. Readers who've been wondering why I "let them change the story" may find some answers here.

The Internet's Biggest Foe
While Powell has launched a vigorous censorship campaign against Howard Stern, the ABC show "Desperate Housewives," and Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction," he has allowed the near total reconcentration of the broadcast industry into a very few hands. Not only do we have fewer voices, but small businesses are now at the mercy of broadcast giants when buying radio or television advertising time.

A Swiftboat to Iran
Jerome R. Corsi, a leader of the Swift Boat Vets and POWs for Truth campaign against former Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John F. Kerry, is hard at work on his next political project: preparing American public opinion for what he sees as a likely war with Iran.

Christ Controlled Content?
In an appearance before Congress in February, when the controversy over Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl moment was at its height, Federal Communications Commission chairman Michael Powell laid some startling statistics on U.S. senators. The number of indecency complaints had soared dramatically to more than 240,000 in the previous year, Powell said. The figure was up from roughly 14,000 in 2002, and from fewer than 350 in each of the two previous years. There was, Powell said, “a dramatic rise in public concern and outrage about what is being broadcast into their homes.”
What Powell did not reveal—apparently because he was unaware—was the source of the complaints. According to a new FCC estimate obtained by Mediaweek, nearly all indecency complaints in 2003—99.8 percent—were filed by the Parents Television Council, an activist group.
